The Founding of Rome. Long ago, twin brothers called Romulus and Remus were left beside a river. A kind she-wolf found them and fed them with her milk. When they grew up they decided to build a city, but they argued over where. Romulus won, so the city was named after him, Rome.

2 ยท Gladiators & the Colosseum

Gladiators and the Colosseum. The Colosseum was a giant stone arena in the middle of Rome. As many as fifty thousand people could squeeze in to watch the shows. Gladiators were fighters who battled each other, and sometimes even wild animals. When a fighter won, the crowd roared with joy.

Roman Roads and Aqueducts. The Romans were amazing builders. They built more than eighty thousand kilometres of straight, strong roads, so soldiers and traders could travel fast. They also built aqueducts, which are like giant stone bridges that carried clean water from the hills right into the city.

Roman Gods. The Romans believed in many gods. Jupiter was the king of the gods, who threw lightning bolts. Mars was the god of war, and Minerva was the goddess of wisdom. The Romans built temples and made statues to honour their gods.
